MOVING TIPS FOR LOUDOUN COUNTY HOME BUYERS
First time movers and experienced travelers will all benefit from some simple tips about making the move. While you may not be able to select the most convenient moving in day, some careful preparation can make the move smoother and less stressful. If you find any of the hints below helpful, use them and pass them on.
When To Move
The busiest move time is during the summer. The beginning and end of the month is also a very busy move time. Whether you are hiring a commercial mover or renting a truck and bringing your family and friends to help, end of the month rentals must be reserved in advance.
If you can move during the winter months, commercial movers often offer discounts. Check them out. Many families wish to move during the summer months when school is out. So, prepare to pay for services during these months.
Call the Good Will Pick-up Early
Good Will, Salvation Army will help the move by taking unneeded clothing, furniture, appliances, automobiles and other items that can be useful to these worthwhile organizations. These organizations often pick up in communities on a rotating basis and often the pick-ups must be scheduled as much as one to two months in advance.
Make Regular Trips to the Municipal Refuse Collection Center.
A few boxes a week will work wonders to reduce the amount of belongings that have to be moved. If you hire a commercial mover, every square foot of the truck used will mean a higher bill. Don't move items only to discard them after you've unpacked and decide you no longer need them.
Pack Like the Pros Do.
It helps a lot to use good boxes and containers to pack your belongings. Uneven sized boxes take up more room in the trucks and are often hard to pack and carry. Be sure to use ample paper, bubble or other material to wrap valuables, china and other breakables. Start packing early. Don't put it off or you won't be organized or careful about labeling.
Notify the Postal Service
Complete the mail forwarding forms with the Postal Service to avoid lost or delayed mail. The Post Office has helpful forwarding services to get your mail to you while your friends, relatives, credit card companies and other mail receives and processes your change of address notices.

FAMILY DISASTER PLANNING
Loudoun County home owners are seldom faced with disasters such as the type experienced by some Americans; the tornados that wreck havoc with the midwest, floods in the south and southwest, severe cold spells experienced by households in the far northern areas of the country, forest and brush fires in the dryer parts of the Rocky Mountain areas and the west coast and hurricane damages in the golf and southern states along the Atlantic Coast.
However, we are in the fringe areas of some of these disaster locations. Loudoun County home owners may experience severe rain damage following the remnants of hurricane moving up from the south. We may see severe cold winds that cause electrical outages for several days. We have seen wind damage to many of the older mature trees along our streets that disrupt traffic, electric supply, roofs damaged and other assorted problems. Long electric outages are probably one of the worst problems in our area, especially in the older areas where overhead electrical supply lines are still our main electric supply.
FAMILY DISASTER PREPARATION KITBE PREPARED WITH A DISASTER KIT FOR YOUR HOME IN LOUDOUN COUNTY.
In 1993 when Hurricane Isabel came through, many homes were without electricity for 3-7 days. Recommendation: Store lots of batteries.
